Advanced Generator Protection (AGP)
Seadrill is committed to deploying technologies that improve fuel efficiency and sustainability. On the West Saturn, Seadrill operates an Advanced Generator Protection (AGP) system that enables the running of high voltage electrical switchboards in Closed Bus Tie (CBT) configuration. In CBT configuration, two engines run in linear closed bus mode when operations and weather permit. This enhanced efficiency significantly reduces fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and well costs. Seadrill plans to implement AGP technology across its floater fleet, working closely with our clients to support this goal. Technologies like AGP are a significant step forward in reaching our industry’s sustainability targets and commitments.

The AKA screen reflects the health and status of the West Saturn’s AGP system. The cabinet displayed in the switchboard room specifically monitors one of six generators on the drillship.
Seadrill’s dynamically positioned vessels use electrically driven thrusters for station keeping during drilling, anchoring, and port maneuvering. The AGP system ensures there is no power lost to the thrusters during an outage and maintains safety in a Closed Bus Tie (CBT) configuration.
The thrusters on a drillship are key components in maintaining precise positioning, crucial for safe and efficient drilling operations. Seadrill’s AGP system on the West Saturn plays a vital role in ensuring these thrusters have the power needed to do so.
